Sciatica is actually not a diagnosis, but a set of symptoms used to describe low back and leg pain. The name refers to the sciatic nerve, which runs from the low back through the buttocks and into your legs. This nerve is the one of the largest in the body and it affects your back, buttocks, thighs, legs and soles of your feet. Sciatica is typically found in people between the ages of 30 and 50 and is not usually the result of injury, but rather due to wear and tear on the spine.
Signs / Symptoms
Pain, tingling, or a burning sensation along the path of the sciatic nerve is the most common symptom of Sciatica. The pain typically begins as a dull ache and gets worse over time. In some cases, patients report "pins-and-needles" in one foot or numbness in their leg or foot.
Healthwise Chiropractic’s Solution
First, it is important to remember that Sciatica is not a diagnosis, but rather a description of a number of symptoms and therefore it is not possible to list one specific solution. The goal of chiropractic as a whole is to restore optimum movement to the spine and to reduce inflammation and pain. This inherently will help reduce or eliminate any pain caused by Sciatica symptoms. Our Doctors of Chiropractic will use a variety of techniques to address the specific symptoms that you are experiencing.
