neck pain Hales Corners WI

Neck Pain

The neck, also called the cervical spine, begins at the base of the skull and contains seven small vertebrae. The cervical spine supports the full weight of your head which is on average about 12 pounds. While the cervical spine can move your head in nearly every direction, this flexibility makes the neck very susceptible to pain and injury.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine that exceeds ten degrees. Most instances of scoliosis are discovered during adolescence; however, it can be developed at any age. In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown. However, in some instances, it is caused by trauma or tumors. Scoliosis can be genetic, so parents who are diagnosed should have their children monitored.

SIGNS / SYMPTOMS
To the patient, scoliosis will manifest itself as back pain and sometimes reduced lung function. It oftentimes limits the amount of activity that a patient can do. Our Doctors of Chiropractic are able to diagnose scoliosis by physical examination/ x-rays.

HEALTHWISE CHIROPRACTIC’S SOLUTION
Our Doctors are able to help with the vast majority of scoliosis cases. However, some severe cases may require surgery. Spinal adjustments and electrical muscle stimulation are frequently prescribed as part of the treatment plan for scoliosis. Though these therapies by themselves have not been proven to reduce scoliosis, they have helped many patients by reducing back pain. Our Doctors also have an array of other therapies available as needed. For most patients, scoliosis is not a debilitating condition and the goal of chiropractic is to prevent it from getting worse.

SIGNS / SYMPTOMS
· Face, neck and/or shoulder pain
· Locked jaw
· Clicking of the jaw
· Headaches
· Dizziness
· Difficulty swallowing

HEALTHWISE CHIROPRACTIC’S SOLUTION
A typical treatment schedule for TMD involves chiropractic adjustments (either manual or Pro Adjuster), applications of heat and ice, and special exercises used to stretch and strengthen your jaw. In some cases, it may be necessary for you to visit a dentist or orthodontist to receive splints.

Whiplash

Injuries to the neck that are the result of the neck being jolted in a particular direction are referred to as whiplash. Whiplash can occur during an auto accident or from a fall, sports injury, or other accident. Whiplash typically manifests itself as a strain or sprain of the ligaments, muscles, and/or tendons of the neck.

SIGNS / SYMPTOMS
Pain and stiffness in the neck are the typical symptoms of a patient who has suffered from whiplash. This pain is often aggravated when the person turns their head. It is also common for whiplash patients to experience headaches at the base of the skull. Most victims of whiplash will display symptoms within 2-48 hours after the accident.

HEALTHWISE CHIROPRACTIC’S SOLUTION
Our Doctors of Chiropractic use a variety of tools and techniques to treat whiplash. Ice and heat are used to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms, as well as provide some pain relief. Our Doctors may use ultrasound technology or electrical stimulation to provide heat and cell stimulation, which can provide short-term pain relief. Chiropractic adjustments are also used to help re-align the vertebra(e) in your spine to provide long-term relief. Lastly, we recommend that victims of whiplash continue to be active unless there are other more serious injuries that make movement detrimental. (Discuss your situation with one of our doctors.) We encourage our patients to perform doctor-prescribed stretches. Often, these prescribed stretches solidify the long-term results that you will gain from your chiropractic visits.
