Injuries to the neck that are the result of the neck being jolted in a particular direction are referred to as whiplash. Whiplash can occur during an auto accident or from a fall, sports injury, or other accident. Whiplash typically manifests itself as a strain or sprain of the ligaments, muscles, and/or tendons of the neck.

Pain and stiffness in the neck are the typical symptoms of a patient who has suffered from whiplash. This pain is often aggravated when the person turns their head. It is also common for whiplash patients to experience headaches at the base of the skull. Most victims of whiplash will display symptoms within 2-48 hours after the accident.

Our Doctors of Chiropractic use a variety of tools and techniques to treat whiplash. Ice and heat are used to reduce inflammation and muscle spasms, as well as provide some pain relief. Our Doctors may use ultrasound technology or electrical stimulation to provide heat and cell stimulation, which can provide short-term pain relief. Chiropractic adjustments are also used to help re-align the vertebra(e) in your spine to provide long-term relief. Lastly, we recommend that victims of whiplash continue to be active unless there are other more serious injuries that make movement detrimental. (Discuss your situation with one of our doctors.) We encourage our patients to perform doctor-prescribed stretches. Often, these prescribed stretches solidify the long-term results that you will gain from your chiropractic visits.
